Key takeaways

  • Beer averages 13.1g of carbs per serving in our catalog, but only 54 of 887 beers list 5g or less.
  • The lowest full-size beers list about 0.9g to 2.3g per serving (see the live table below).
  • Light beers usually, but not always, land in the low-carb band. Read the number, not the label.
  • Serving size matters: some rows are per 12oz, some per 16.9oz, and a few per 3.4oz.

Beers with under 5g of carbs exist, but they are a small minority: 54 of the 887 beers in the DrinkLeader catalog list 5g or fewer per serving. The lowest full-size options list about 0.9g to 2.3g per serving. The table below is generated live from the catalog.

The lowest-carb beers in the catalog

This table shows beers with a listed serving of at least 8oz, ordered by carbs. We exclude rows with tiny serving sizes here so numbers are comparable. Beer varies by region and reformulation; check the label of the beer you are buying.

Why light beer is lower in carbs

Beer carbohydrate comes mainly from grain-derived sugars and starches that yeast does not fully ferment. Brewers of light and low-carb beers typically ferment more completely, so less residual carbohydrate is left. The details of each recipe belong to the brewer, so we only report what the label or database says, not why a specific brand comes out where it does.

Lower carbs do not always mean lower alcohol or fewer calories. Alcohol contributes about 7 calories per gram, against about 4 for carbohydrate, so a stronger beer with few carbs can still carry more calories than a weaker one. The NIAAA describes a US standard drink as 12 fl oz of roughly 5% beer, about 14g of pure alcohol.

Popular light beers: check the actual numbers

This table pulls beers with "light" in the name, sorted by carbs, so you can see how the label compares with the numbers. (Some brands spell it "Lite", which this search does not catch.)

Beers with "light" in the name, lowest carbs first
DrinkTypeServingCarbsCaloriesABV
Natural Light Beer 12oz 3.2g 95 4.2%
Busch Light Beer 12oz 3.2g 95 4.1%
Yuengling Light Lager Beer 12oz 3.2g 99 4.0%
Milwaukee's Best Light Beer 12oz 3.5g 96 4.1%
Blue Moon Light Beer 12oz 3.6g 95 4.0%
Shiner Light Blonde Beer 12oz 3.8g 99 4.2%
Beck's Premier Light Beer 12oz 3.9g 64 2.3%
Keystone Light Beer 12oz 4.7g 101 4.1%
Corona Light Beer 12oz 4.8g 99 4.1%
Coors Light Beer 12oz 5.0g 102 4.2%

Note that "light" is a brand-style word, and different countries use it differently, so use the listed carbs to decide.

Beers just above 5g

If a strict 5g cutoff is too tight, this table shows the next tier, sorted by carbs.

Low carbs versus low calories

People often search for low-carb beer when they really want a lighter drink overall. The two overlap but are not the same. A beer can have few carbs and still be strong, and alcohol supplies most of the calories in a light beer. The table below sorts by calories instead, still limited to servings of 8oz or more.

Lowest-calorie beers with a serving of 8oz or more
DrinkTypeServingCarbsCaloriesABV
Miller64 Beer 12oz 2.4g 64 2.8%
Beck's Premier Light Beer 12oz 3.9g 64 2.3%
Molson Canadian 67 Beer 11.5oz 2.5g 67 3.0%
Hoegarden Hoegaarden Agrum Beer 8.5oz 9.0g 67 2.0%
Small Beer Lager Beer 11.8oz 6.6g 77 2.1%
Hahn SuperDry 3.5 Beer 11.2oz 2.2g 78 3.5%
Tecate Alta Beer 12oz 2.4g 85 4.0%
Michelob Ultra Pure Gold Beer 12oz 2.5g 85 3.8%

If you are comparing two beers, look at carbs, calories and ABV together. A 3% beer and a 5% beer at the same carb level are not the same drink, and you may drink the lower-strength one differently. Use the low-ABV list to browse by strength.

Beer versus other low-carb choices

A low-carb beer is still a beer. Its carbs come in bigger servings than a spirit, and a second or third can add up. The average beer here lists 13.1g; the average hard seltzer lists 2.3g. Using the beer tables above, two 12oz light beers at roughly 3g each come to about 6g, which is already above the 5g "low-carb" band used on this site for a single serving. Whether that is acceptable depends on your daily target, which we cannot set for you.

How to read a beer listing

  • Serving size. Compare like with like. A 16.9oz bottle contains about 40 percent more beer than a 12oz can, and its carbs scale with it.
  • Very small servings. A few catalog rows list 3.4oz (about 100 mL). Multiply before comparing.
  • Calories. Low-carb beer typically has fewer calories, but check them next to ABV.
  • Data quality. International rows may reflect different brewery formulations. We re-verify products over time, see the methodology.

If beer does not fit your carb budget

Hard seltzer averages 2.3g per serving, and plain spirits list about 0g. See keto hard seltzer or the keto alcohol guide. This is information, not medical advice. The CDC defines moderate drinking as up to two drinks a day for men and one for women.

Frequently asked questions

What beer has the fewest carbs?

The lowest-carb beers in the catalog list around one to three grams per serving. The live tables on this page show the current leaders and the serving size each figure applies to.

Is light beer low in carbs?

Often, but not always. Light beers usually list fewer carbs than regular lagers, though some still sit above 5g per serving. Check the number for the specific beer.

Why do some listings show a 3.4oz serving?

Some catalog rows come from data published per 100 mL (about 3.4 fl oz). Those carbs are for a small amount and would be roughly three and a half times higher in a 12oz bottle, so compare only like serving sizes.

Is non-alcoholic beer lower in carbs?

Not necessarily, and this catalog tracks alcoholic drinks for these comparisons. Check the label of any non-alcoholic beer you are considering.
